Uber Vs Lyft: 9 Reasons It’s Way Better to be an Uber Driver

Like Uber more than Lyft? You’re not the only one! This week, we’ve challenged senior RSG contributors Christian Perea and Jay Cradeur to explain why they like Uber (Christian) and Lyft (Jay) more than the other service. Don’t agree with Christian today? Check out Monday’s article, where Jay explained why he likes Lyft more.

Uber or Lyft?

I have a pretty long history of being critical of Uber and in my 3.5 years of driving, I’ve done 10 times as many trips with Lyft compared to Uber. I favored Lyft a lot not so much because I liked them better, but because I hold a bit of contempt towards Uber for always lowering prices first, deploying upfront pricing first, and overall becoming the epitome of an evil dystopian tech company.

How Do Uber and Lyft’s Most Important Features Compare?

Do you know your Uber and Lyft driver apps? It turns out, there are some really neat features on the Uber and Lyft driver apps that can help you drive more efficiently, saving you time and helping you earn more money. As these features have been rolled out (mostly) nationwide, RSG contributor Jay Cradeur outlines below what these features are and how to use them to maximize your income.

For better or worse, Uber and Lyft are always innovating and adding (or removing) features in the driver app. In this case, both Uber and Lyft have incorporated features that have made it much easier for a driver to manage his or her workload.

There are four features in particular that have improved the driver experience, and I’ll share my impressions and strategies so you can maintain more control over your day and maximize your profits.

How Bonuses Differ Between Small and Big Markets

Many of our writers drive in California or other big cities across the country, and today we wanted to feature a comparison between a big market and small market. What are drivers earning in big markets vs. small markets? Do small markets offer better opportunities in different areas for drivers? We had RSG contributors Jay Cradeur (big market) and Joe Pierce (small market) go head to head to see how the markets differ – and how drivers can take advantage of their markets no matter where they’re located.

Today we are going to look at the differences between working in a big market and working in a small market.  Specifically we will look at the different bonus structures that are available in each market type.

We will be comparing bonuses in San Francisco and Minneapolis, where both Uber and Lyft compete with each other for drivers’ attentions.  Jay Cradeur will share his driving experience in San Francisco, and Joe Pierce will share his driving experience in Minneapolis.

Who Tips Better: Lyft or Uber Passengers?

Everyone wants to know the best driving strategies, how to get paid and how to earn more money as a rideshare driver. One of those answers is “get more tips” – but how do you know which app, Uber or Lyft, has better tippers? Intrepid RSG senior contributor Will Preston tackled this difficult question with his own research – the answers may (or may not) surprise you!

Lyft drivers always talk about how they get paid more on Lyft, and in our most recent survey of over 1,100 drivers, they did indeed report earning over $2 per hour more than Uber drivers.  Since the rates are the same in most cities (except for Lyft Line rates, which are higher), there are only two reasons this could be the case. Either the bonuses are way better, or Lyft passengers tip more.

The former has never applied to me, as the Power Driver bonus always requires way more rides than I’m capable of doing in a weekend of driving. The latter never made sense to me either, because I always got plenty of cash tips from my Uber rides, both before and after they supported tipping.  So I never really understood the “I get paid more with Lyft” mantra.

Lyft Ride Streak Bonuses and Uber Consecutive Trips Boost

Uber and Lyft are releasing new driver bonuses in the form of ride streaks: consecutive rides given by drivers. But is this just another way to keep us from canceling on rides, like POOL or Line, that we don’t want to give? Today, senior RSG contributor Christian Perea lets us know what Lyft Streak Bonuses and Uber Consecutive Trip Boosts are, how they work, and how they could affect drivers.

There’s a new driver bonus in town from both Uber and Lyft, and it gives you cash for completing rides in a row during peak hours. Uber calls it the “Consecutive Trips Boost” and Lyft calls it the “Ride Streaks Bonus”. Both are similar programs that encourage drivers to accept every trip that comes their way without logging out, denying, or cancelling a ride during a set time period.

Lyft just announced they will be rolling this promotion out to drivers in all of their large and medium sized markets. Meanwhile, Uber has been testing several versions of this program in Boston, NYC, and Singapore over the last six months and are now testing it in San Francisco, Denver, and New Jersey. This leads me to believe that these sort of promotions will become a big part of driving for Lyft and Uber over the next few months.
