Freebird App Review – How the Freebird app works
As of 2019, Freebird is an app that gives Uber and Lyft riders cash and points back when they use the app to order an Uber or Lyft ride. You can download the Freebird app here (Freebird promo code: RSG).
What is the Freebird app?
As soon as I heard about this app I had to test it out. What I discovered has convinced me to use the Freebird app every time I need to order an Uber or Lyft. And I highly encourage you to test out the Freebird app yourself to see how it works.
The first thing I had to do, of course, was download the app and log in. When you first open the app, it’ll ask you to connect to your Uber or Lyft account. You can choose to switch to the other option at any time, but you can only be connected to one platform at a time.
I chose Uber just because I use Uber more often than Lyft.
Then, from there you have to give location permissions to Freebird in order for the app to work properly.
Once you’re in the app, go to the main menu (called Profile in the app) and click Promo Codes. It’ll ask you to enter a Freebird promo code if you’ve got one. You can use our promo code RSG if you’d like to give us credit and get free credit added to your account.
Ok, now I’ve got the app all set up and I’m ready to go, right? Not quite. Next I needed to enter my payment info. The way this cash back app works is that when you use the same credit card to order your Uber or Lyft ride and pay for your meal at a local participating restaurant, then you’ll get cash and points back. You must use the same credit card for your ride and meal or you won’t get the cash back.
If you’re thinking, “what if I want to use the app to order an Uber ride but not go to a restaurant,” then that’s where the points come in. You can earn at least 250 points for each ride you take, whether it’s to school, work, or somewhere else. Once you reach 5,000, you get $10 cash back.

So you can get points back for using the app to order Uber and Lyft rides, but you can earn cash back by visiting participating restaurants and bars. Just download the app and take a look for yourself to see what I’m talking about.
You’ll also earn bonus points by doing things like linking your card, and when you’re ready to cash out your earnings, they’ll give you bonus points for linking your debit card. Overall, there’s several ways to earn rewards back besides just going to participating restaurants.
Now that my payment info was set up, I was ready to try it out. If you live in a city, chances are that the home screen of your Freebird app will show restaurants nearby that are offering cash back rewards. I saw several restaurants and bars around me offering $4 in cash back. The first time I looked through this list, there were only a few restaurants available. But these are only the restaurants that are currently open and offering a reward. Closer to lunch time I looked in the app again and the list had at least tripled. That was more like it.
I grabbed a friend of mine and treated him to an Uber ride to a participating restaurant nearby. Granted, on a beautiful day like it was, I would have been ok with walking the slightly less than one mile it would have taken to get to this restaurant, but I wanted to try Freebird out so I ordered the ride through the Freebird app.
The process was fairly seamless. I just chose a restaurant and clicked Confirm Uberx. They even had a bonus fun fact for me to read while it was finding my driver:
Although I ordered the Uber ride through the Freebird app, I received notifications from Uber like I normally would, including when my driver was selected and when he was 2 minutes away. I liked that familiarity. It made using the Freebird app that much more enjoyable. The only difference I noticed was that it didn’t show me how many drivers are nearby like the Uber app does. But, being in downtown Minneapolis, I knew the wait wouldn’t be long anyway.
Just a note, I learned during my review of the Freebird app that Freebird does not mark-up the Uber or Lyft rides. You pay the same rate for an Uber or Lyft ride that you would in the Uber or Lyft app. Freebird makes money by helping local business advertise on the app, which are the participating restaurants that offer cash back.
How Much Money Did I Earn?
This part was surprising to me, because I was able to earn a substantial amount with just two Freebird trips (one to the restaurant and one back), but it does have to do with the fact that I entered some promo codes at the beginning.
By the end of the day on the first day of using the Freebird app, I was able to cash out $25.17 directly to my bank account. Awesome news for my first Freebird review!
That means I almost completely covered how much I had spent on the Uber rides and for lunch. The next day, I even earned $4 more, which is still sitting in my app.
Here’s a screenshot of some of the points and money I’d earned from the app:
So, as you can see above, I received $5 cash back each of my first two rides by using the RSG sign-up referral code, the full amount of my Uber rides to and from the restaurant as part of the promo code Freebird provided to me via email, 250 points for my ride to my office from the restaurant (which translates to about 50 cents), $4 for going to a participating restaurant and purchasing something from there (no minimum purchase price) and bonus points for linking my payment card.
It was pretty cool seeing that much money sitting there in my account, pretty much immediately. I’m still waiting for the cash back to hit my bank account, but Freebird said it could take 3 to 5 business days depending on your bank. Soon I should have that money back in hand!
Final Freebird Words
Overall, people are happy with it, including me and I’ve determined that Freebird is a legit and safe app.
It’s a great app for family and friends who want to go to restaurants and bars together, take an Uber or Lyft, and subsidize their transportation costs.
There are a few suggestions in the Google Play Store reviews, such as implementing UberPool’s feature of walking a certain distance to cut some money off your tab. But the app has a great 4.3/5 score in the Play Store.
And in the Apple App Store, someone left a review that says it’s the “Most obvious app ever to have on your phone! This app gives you money for do things you were already going to do, and helps you discover new places.”
I recommend everyone that uses Uber and Lyft download the Freebird app (promo code: RSG) and give it a try, as there is nothing to lose. Plus, I’m almost certain you will love it just like I did.
How Uber and Lyft Drivers can use Freebird to make more money
When you use your Freebird promo code to refer people to Freebird, you earn $10 for each new user you refer. Just download the app, enter promo code RSG in Profile > Promo Codes, and then get your unique invite code by going to Profile > Invite & Get Cash.
Tell your Uber and Lyft passengers about the Freebird app while you’re driving for Uber and Lyft. If they seem interested, send them a text message template with a link to download the app and your unique invite code. Remind them that they get two free $5 credits added to their account when they use your code.
We at The Rideshare Guy even made free business cards that you can print and hand-out to your passengers to get the word out easier. Just fill in your unique code in the blank spot.
The more you promote the app, the more money you’ll earn. There are some drivers earning hundreds of dollars each month just by giving out their promo code for Freebird. It’s worth a shot!
