Driving delivery is an integral component to many drivers’ strategies, as driving rideshare + delivery can maximize time on the road. Deciding which delivery company to start with, however, can be a challenge – how do you know which will be busiest in your city? Today, RSG contributor Paula Gibbins makes it a little easier for you to decide with the latest sign up bonuses for Postmates.
I always recommend drivers sign up for a couple of services (Uber, Lyft, Postmates, DoorDash and more here), since it only takes a few minutes and can help you stay busy and profitable. If you’ve been considering delivery driving but didn’t know where to start, consider signing up with a Postmates driver referral code, get the bonus in your city, and then see if delivery is a good option for you as a driver.
Getting Started with Postmates
Signing up to deliver with Postmates is fairly easy, and you can check out Dash’s walkthrough of signing up for Postmates. Signing up to drive with Postmates is, in fact, easier than signing up to drive for Uber/Lyft, since Postmates isn’t nearly as strict on what type of vehicle you use to deliver food. You can have a two-door vehicle, a bicycle, truck, etc.
Postmates Courier Delivery Requirements
According to the Terms of Service, Postmates requires their couriers to be at least 18 years of age. They allow the couriers to use cars or bicycles to deliver the customer’s order, which is good news for people looking to make some extra cash but don’t have a vehicle available.
When creating an account, you’ll be required to provide personal information including a photo of yourself for identification verification purposes. Also be sure to enter your bank information for direct deposit of your paycheck.
How to Apply and Become a Postmates Courier
It’s very simple to sign up. The most important thing is finding out if Postmates is available in your area. The good news is, you can drive for Postmates in any city where it’s available. Simply go online and you’ll be ready to go (after you’ve gone through the full sign-up process, of course).
To sign up, go to Postmates. From there, you’ll be prompted to enter an email address and password.
You will then be brought to a screen where you can read the service agreement. You must click “Agree” to move forward and continue with your application. From there, it’ll have you fill in your name and phone number and then your address so you can be sent your welcome kit.
Once you get past that part of the sign-up process, it’ll ask you what kind of vehicle you’ll be using:
If you choose a vehicle option where a driver’s license is required to use it, they will then ask for your driver’s license information. From there you’ll consent to a background check where you’ll have to enter your Social Security Number (SSN) and date of birth. You will need an SSN to sign up for Postmates, as Postmates runs a background check on its drivers.
After signing up, you’ll download the Postmates app and wait for your “welcome kit” to arrive, including your Postmates prepaid card (which you will use to purchase food items if the order was not paid for ahead of time).
The app will let you know if there are any further steps you’ll need to take before you’re ready to start delivering.
Once you’re activated, you’ll turn on your app and wait for delivery requests.

Do Postmates Couriers Need Referral Codes?
In order to get any bonus Postmates is offering, you need to sign up using Postmates driver referral codes. Referral codes are a great way to earn money by having your friends or family sign up as couriers. The incentives for the referral program is different by state. After you sign up for Postmates, Postmates will encourage you to refer friends to make more money.
In Minnesota, here’s the breakdown of the current referral offer:
It breaks it down by the main driving locations and the dates that the offer is good for. It is also very upfront about what you will earn versus what the person you invite will earn with this incentive.
So, how do you invite people? The email address you used to sign up as a courier will be the referral code your friends and family will input when they sign up for Postmates. One thing to keep in mind is the offer is only good for a certain number of days from when they sign up for the service, so they’ll need to start delivering sooner rather than later to reap the benefits of the referral.
As a new driver working toward your referral bonus, keep in mind these are guaranteed earnings, not an added bonus on top of what you earn.

The goal with guaranteed earnings, then, is to hit your required deliveries as quickly as possible (make sure to read what your time frame is!). You’re not looking for the delivery that earns you the most money – you want to do all, even the shorter, cheaper ones. Let’s say your guaranteed earnings is $600 but, after completing the 70 deliveries within 30 days, you’ve only made $450 – Postmates will pay you the difference.
How Much Do Postmates Couriers Make?
As far as getting paid, you’re paid according “to the formula for your city”. For my market in Minnesota, here is what my earnings breakdown looks like by the cities where Postmates is available:
The earnings for each delivery includes an amount for each completed pick-up and drop-off, a per-minute-waited rate for the time you spend at the pick-up location, a per-mile rate for the distance between the pick-up and drop-off locations and any blitz bonuses that are shown when you accept the delivery. Postmates couriers also keep 100% of their tips.
This “blitz pricing” occurs when there is high demand, similar to surge pricing with Uber. When you get the offer for delivery, you’ll be informed then that there is blitz pricing in place. It is offered on an order-by-order basis, so just because the area shows it’s busy when you go online, it does not guarantee that you’ll receive a blitz price for your next delivery.
Postmates also offers batched orders, which means you could pick up another order on your way to delivering the one you already have. This increases how much you’re able to deliver within an hour, since you won’t have to make multiple stops (and risk the food getting cold).

Benefits to Being a Postmates Courier
There are some great perks for Postmates couriers, including PerkSpot and TIKD.
PerkSpot is something you sign up for after you’re activated with Postmates. If you make at least 10 deliveries every month, you’ll have access to the perks for the following month. Some of these perks include discounts at certain automotive, cell phone services, health and wellness services and more. You’ll be able to see exactly what those discounts are once you’re eligible to sign up after being activated for Postmates.
TIKD is another perk that Postmates offers their couriers. The first offering is to discount your first parking or traffic ticket submitted through TIKD. The biggest bonus through this program is TIKD guarantees you will not get points put on your license against you if you use their services to pay off the ticket. They also guarantee avoidance of late fees and interest-free payment plans for paying off your ticket. The downside is that this is currently only available in San Francisco and Miami.
How Much Do Postmates Couriers Typically Make?
We answered the question how much money can you make with Postmates, and we found it’s between $9.50 and $14 per hour. Recent announcements from Postmates say that drivers earn $18 an hour, which seems on the high side.
There is a lot of competition in the delivery space though with Uber Eats, DoorDash, and other local companies getting in on the food delivery action. This is both good and bad, as it’s hard to say which one company you should go with it – it depends on what’s the most popular company in your market. On the other hand, it does encourage you to sign up for multiple companies to determine which one pays you the best and keeps you the busiest.
As always, it makes the most sense to combine delivery with rideshare driving (Uber and Lyft) so you stay consistently busy during your driving hours. Postmates can help you do this by keeping you busy during lunch, which is typically a slow time of day for drivers (at least during the weekdays).
At the very least, you can sign up with Postmates today, deliver the required number of deliveries for your city in 30 days, and get a guaranteed pay out! You can use our Postmates referral code here to sign up with Postmates.

It is not guaranteed that you’ll earn more during this time, but if the demand is high, you’ll likely receive blitz pricing. They don’t seem to have a breakdown listed of what this blitz pricing really looks like, but you will be notified before accepting a delivery that it will pay higher due to being in a blitz price time and location.
How can I contact the customer if something goes wrong?
Within the app, click on the question mark in the corner if you’re having an issue. From there, scroll to the bottom and click on the Email link under “Contact Us”. What are batched and chained deliveries?
A batched delivery will contain multiple orders from the same location. This lets you do multiple deliveries at once, saving you time and earning you more money. Be sure to double check you’re delivering the correct order to the right drop-off space.
A chained delivery is multiple orders from different locations. These will end up being deliveries where the drop-off location is in close proximity to each other.
What do I do if the customer isn’t there to receive the order?
If you go to the delivery location and the customer cannot be found, Postmates has you return all items that are able to be returned such as non-food and non-perishables. In some instances, your app will be able to detect the items in the order that can be returned and direct you back to the pick-up spot.
Do I get rated for making deliveries?
You are giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down from your customer after your delivery. This will not affect your standings as a courier for Postmates.
