The New Uber Driver Score Explained (CMT)

Millions of people have chosen to become Uber drivers in the past decade partly because of the flexibility but mostly for the freedom of working without a boss!

Well, I have news for them: there is a 24-hour boss with gig apps, and it is called an algorithm. Every step one takes is recovered for data analysis, and from pricing to matching, these algorithms decide how our day is going to shape up.

Here comes a new addition to the Big Brother watching saga: Connected Mobility Technology. So much for someone not looking over your shoulder!

We talked about this on SMTMC live (Every Tuesday at 3 PM PST / 6 PM EST) in detail a couple of episodes ago:

Uber, the global leader in ride-hailing services, has recently announced a groundbreaking partnership with Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), a leading provider of mobile telematics and analytics.

This strategic deal aims to leverage CMT’s cutting-edge technology to enhance driver safety, improve service quality, and optimize operational efficiency. The collaboration marks a significant step forward in Uber’s ongoing efforts to prioritize safety and innovation in its platform.

The Essence of the Partnership

CMT is renowned for its expertise in mobile telematics, providing advanced solutions that collect and analyze driving data to promote safer driving behaviors.

Uber’s partnership with CMT will integrate these telematics solutions into its platform, offering a comprehensive and real-time assessment of driver performance.

Over the past few years, Uber has incessantly complained about increased commercial insurance rates. Is this the way they are going to attempt to cut down on increased CI premiums? Time will tell!

There are five areas of data collection by CMT via the gyroscope on your phone. Uber will analyze and use this data to hopefully warn drivers of their mistakes before taking action.

The Five Areas of data collection by CMT

The core components of CMT’s technology include:

Real-Time Data Collection: Utilizing mobile sensors and GPS technology, CMT collects real-time data on various aspects of driving behavior, such as speed, braking, acceleration, and cornering.

Behavioral Analysis: Advanced algorithms analyze the collected data to identify patterns and assess overall driving behavior. This analysis provides insights into safe and unsafe driving practices.

Feedback Mechanisms: Drivers receive real-time feedback on their driving performance, enabling them to make immediate adjustments and improve their safety standards.

Comprehensive Reporting: Detailed reports are generated to provide Uber with actionable insights into driver behavior trends, allowing for targeted interventions and training programs.

Objectives and Expected Outcomes

Enhanced Driver Safety: Safety is a top priority for Uber, and the integration of CMT’s telematics solutions will significantly enhance driver safety. By monitoring and analyzing driving behaviors, Uber can identify risky practices and provide drivers with the necessary feedback and training to mitigate these risks. This proactive approach will help prevent accidents and ensure a safer ride experience for passengers.

Improved Service Quality: Service quality is another critical aspect of the ride-hailing experience. The partnership with CMT will enable Uber to monitor and evaluate driving behaviors that impact passenger comfort, such as smooth acceleration, gentle braking, and careful cornering. By promoting better driving practices, Uber can enhance the overall ride experience and increase passenger satisfaction.

Operational Efficiency: Efficient operations are crucial for the success of any ride-hailing platform. CMT’s technology will provide Uber with valuable data-driven insights into driver performance and behavior trends. These insights will enable Uber to optimize its driver management strategies, identify areas for improvement, and implement targeted initiatives to enhance efficiency.

Driver Accountability and Support: The real-time feedback and comprehensive reporting provided by CMT’s telematics solutions will foster a sense of accountability among drivers. Knowing that their driving behavior is being monitored encourages drivers to adopt safer and more responsible practices. Additionally, the feedback mechanisms will serve as a valuable tool for driver coaching and support, helping drivers improve their skills and performance.

Addressing Challenges and Concerns

While the partnership between Uber and CMT brings numerous benefits, it is essential to address potential challenges and concerns to ensure the successful implementation and acceptance of the new technology.

As drivers have 10 seconds (ping duration) to accept or decline a trip, that is enough cause for stress. We have to make sure that the trip offered is a profitable one, know where it is going to end up, know how busy it is at the drop-off zone, and account for the many other metrics we have to deal with!

Data Privacy and Security: The collection and analysis of driving data raise important questions about data privacy and security. Uber and CMT are committed to ensuring that driver data is handled responsibly and transparently. Robust data privacy measures will be implemented to protect driver information, and drivers will be informed about how their data is used and stored.

Driver Acceptance and Stress: The introduction of real-time monitoring may initially cause stress or resistance among drivers. To mitigate this, Uber will emphasize the supportive and developmental nature of the telematics solutions. The feedback mechanisms are designed to provide constructive insights and coaching rather than punitive measures. By framing the technology as a tool for improvement, Uber aims to foster a positive and collaborative environment for drivers.

My Take

Isn’t all this treating drivers pretty much like employees? I see stickers behind company cars and trucks like FedEx and UPS for the public to report dangerous driving behavior. Uber considers us as ICs (Independent Contractors), so how will all this data collection change that dynamic?

Driver safety always ranks as one of the top concerns of our community.

However, this new deal between Uber and CMT seems like it is more for Rider Safety and possibly to lower their elevated costs for Commercial Insurance coverage TNCs are mandated to provide. We are told that the driving score will not be shared with the passengers. I sure hope Uber will keep its word.

Another concern I have is, will Uber share this data with the personal insurance carriers of drivers? I think that would be a horrible situation. I can imagine insurance carriers jacking up the premiums on drivers with low scores!

But overall, I am not upset about this deal. Lyft has had this for over a year. Unfortunately, their scores do not reflect reality. We also must understand that the information received is from our cell phone gyroscope. What if a driver has an older model cell phone and the data collected is totally inaccurate?

Uber’s new deal with Cambridge Mobile Telematics marks a transformative moment in the ride-hailing industry. By integrating CMT’s advanced telematics solutions, Uber is taking proactive steps to enhance driver safety, improve service quality, and optimize operational efficiency.

The partnership reflects Uber’s commitment to innovation and its dedication to providing the best possible experience for both drivers and passengers.

Don’t ever forget: Big Brother is always watching!
