California regulators have certified a union for Uber and Lyft drivers, a milestone in a years-long fight by gig workers and the third state to let ride-hailing drivers organize, after Washington in 2022 and Massachusetts in 2024. The California Gig Workers Union, formed with SEIU support, now heads into contract talks over pay, benefits, and working conditions.

  • The Public Employment Relations Board recognized the union after it secured support from 30% of active drivers in August. California is home to about 350,000 ride-hailing drivers, according to SEIU.
  • The win claws back some of the ground drivers lost under 2020’s Prop 22, which let the companies keep classifying drivers as independent contractors. Last year’s AB 1340 gave gig drivers the right to organize; Uber dropped its opposition after separate insurance reforms passed.

Nashville is the first city where a Lyft request can be matched with a driverless Waymo. As of Wednesday, riders in covered parts of the city may get a robotaxi instead of a human driver, though they can decline an autonomous ride or opt out entirely. It is a part of Lyft’s push into the world of robotaxis, and Waymo’s first external rideshare app partnership outside of Uber.

Amazon-owned Zoox is a distant second to Waymo in San Francisco, so it is competing on novelty. Its driverless pods have no steering wheel and draw phone cameras, and the company is leaning on a Rider Lounge, wine pop-ups, festival sponsorships, and restaurant tie-ins to win riders in the country’s busiest testing ground for autonomous vehicles.

  • The scale gap is wide. Waymo runs nearly 4,000 vehicles across 15 cities and more than 500,000 rides a week; Zoox has about 100 vehicles and roughly 10,000 U.S. rides a week, and cannot yet charge for rides in San Francisco while it awaits state approval.
  • Zoox is starting to move. It began paid rides in Las Vegas last month at prices slightly above standard Uber and Lyft trips, and won a federal exemption to put up to 5,000 vehicles without wipers or mirrors on the road over two years.
  • The bigger point for the industry: most riders still do not know the robotaxi category exists, one Wharton marketer notes, so the race right now is less about beating rivals than selling the concept. Tesla says it will start Cybercab rides, and Uber and Wayve just launched testing in London.
