Lyft Driver Accused of Using AI-Generated Photo to Bill Passenger for a Clean Up Fee

Source: ABC News
A Lyft driver in Florida was accused of submitting an AI-generated photo to justify a $75 cleaning charge against a group of teenage riders. After the passenger’s family identified an AI watermark on the image, Lyft refunded the charge and permanently removed the driver from the platform. The story immediately went viral, opening up a conversation about how companies like Lyft will handle screenshots to make decisions in the AI era.
- Bert Gor said his teenage daughter Ella took a Lyft home from the beach on May 16. He was charged a $75 cleaning fee on top of the ride cost.
- The photo Lyft sent as proof showed spilled drinks and french fries across the backseat. Ella spotted a Gemini logo in the bottom-right corner of the image.
- Lyft told ABC News it ‘takes damage disputes seriously’ and reviews each matter based on available information.
Florida Appeals Court Gives Lyft Broad Immunity, Which May Protect Company in Lawsuits

Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeal affirmed the dismissal of misrepresentation claims against Lyft in Haddad v. Lyft Florida, Inc. on May 13, 2026, ruling that Florida statutes give transportation network companies broad immunity for harm arising while a driver is logged into the platform. The court held the immunity applies regardless of how a plaintiff’s claim is styled, which
- This ruling may protect Lyft and other TNCs (like Uber) in Florida lawsuits where passengers claimed the companies are liable for their protection while using their platforms.
- Because the immunity is not a traditional affirmative defense, trial courts can grant dismissal at the motion-to-dismiss stage, before discovery begins.
- The plaintiff had alleged assault by her Lyft driver and argued that statements on Lyft’s website misled her about ride safety. The court found those claims fell inside the statute’s plain-text immunity.
Tesla Discloses Teleoperators Were Driving in Two Robotaxi Crashes

Source: TechCrunch
Newly unredacted NHTSA filings show Tesla Robotaxis have crashed at least twice while a remote teleoperator, not the autonomous driving system, was at the controls. Both incidents occurred in Austin at low speed with a safety monitor onboard and no passengers in the vehicle. Tesla had previously redacted all 17 of its Robotaxi crash narratives as confidential business information; this week it released the full descriptions.
- July 2025: a teleoperator took over a stuck Tesla, drove it up a curb, and hit a metal fence. January 2026: another teleoperator clipped a construction barricade at approximately 9 mph.
- Tesla has told lawmakers remote operators can pilot vehicles only under 10 mph, a capability the company says is used to move stuck cars without waiting for a first responder.
- Most of the other 15 newly unredacted crashes involved a Tesla being struck by another vehicle. Musk said last month that ‘making sure things are completely safe’ is the largest limiting factor on scaling. Waymo and Zoox currently operate larger fleets than Tesla.
Uber Doubles Its Delivery Hero Stake, Becomes Largest Shareholder

Source: Reuters
Uber has more than doubled its stake in Germany’s Delivery Hero to approximately 19.5% of issued capital, worth about 1.7 billion euros. The increase makes Uber the largest shareholder in its European food-delivery competitor. In a regulatory filing, Uber said it does not currently intend to push its stake above 30%, the threshold that would trigger a mandatory takeover offer.
- Uber also holds options on an additional 5.6% of shares, which could give it a blocking minority. Delivery Hero shares closed 5.6% higher after the announcement.
- The increase comes as former majority owner Prosus is required to reduce its Delivery Hero stake below 10% by late summer under European Commission conditions tied to its Just Eat Takeaway deal. Uber bought a 4.5% stake from Prosus in April.
- Activist investor Aspex Management has raised its stake to about 15% and is calling for CEO Niklas Oestberg to resign. JPMorgan described Uber’s investment as ‘a clear endorsement’ of Delivery Hero’s asset base. The annual meeting is scheduled for June 23.
SoftBank Exits Its Entire Uber Position as Uber Reports 25% Bookings Growth

Source: Yahoo Finance
SoftBank has fully exited its position in Uber, according to a recent 13F filing. Uber stock currently trades near $74, approximately 27% below its 52-week high of $101.99, with a market cap of $151.8 billion. Uber’s Q1 2026 results showed trips up 20%, gross bookings up 25% to $53.7 billion, and adjusted EBITDA up 33% to $2.5 billion.
- SoftBank’s 13F also showed full exits from Circle Internet Group and Lemonade and a significant reduction in its T-Mobile stake, indicating a broader portfolio reshuffle rather than a thesis change on Uber.
- Analysts maintain a ‘Strong Buy’ consensus rating on UBER with a mean price target of $106.42, about 44% above current levels.
- Uber One has grown to 50 million members and now accounts for about half of gross bookings across Mobility and Delivery. Q2 guidance: gross bookings of $56.25 billion to $57.75 billion (18% to 22% YoY constant-currency growth) and non-GAAP EPS of $0.78 to $0.82 (31% to 38% growth).
