If you would have told me ten years ago that I’d be driving strangers around in my car for money one day, I would have thought you were crazy. But along with many others, that’s exactly what I started doing in 2013. And since that first day of driving, Uber’s business model has exploded in popularity: they are now valued at billions of dollars, have millions of drivers on their platform and are in hundreds of cities across the world.
There’s a good chance you’ve heard of Uber from a friend, online or in the media. But in case you haven’t, Uber is a service that allows everyday people like you and me to use our personal vehicles to transport passengers through a mobile application. Sounds pretty simple, right?
While it’s not rocket science being an Uber driver, it’s also not as easy as it seems either. When I first started driving for Uber, there weren’t a lot of experts to guide me through the process, but fortunately for you, things have changed. I’ve gone through it all, having driven for multiple rideshare companies, interviewed thousands of drivers about their experience and now work full time studying the industry from the perspective of a driver. Is Uber the Most Flexible Job in the World?
I like to tell people Uber is probably the most flexible job in the world. You can literally log on and off of the app whenever you want. Once you’re online you can do as many or as few rides as you want. I can’t think of a single other job in the world that provides that much flexibility. Whenever drivers are polled, flexibility is one of the top reasons why people say they work for Uber.
There are a lot of reasons why people look for part time opportunities to make money, and if you’re looking for a flexible job, this should be right up your alley.
How Much Money Can I Make With Uber?
This is usually the first question people like to ask and, if you’re anything like me, flexibility is great, but you also need to earn some money, right? On average, drivers will earn about $15-$20/hr. But those numbers can really vary depending on when and where you drive.
If you’re in a big city and you target Friday and Saturday nights (typically when demand is at its highest), you could easily earn $20-$30/hr. But if you’re in a smaller city and can only drive on weekdays during lunch time (typically when demand is at its lowest), you might earn only $10-$15/hr. On top of that, you’re also responsible for all the expenses you might incur while driving. So while $30/hr might sound great, you will have to pay for gas and maintenance on your vehicle.
Ultimately, the amount you earn is going to depend on a variety of factors. While it’s important to do your due diligence (like reading this guide), at the end of the day, you should really go out and drive for Uber yourself to see what your earnings will be like. Try different times of the day and week to figure out what works for your schedule and what brings you the most money.

One of the nice things about working for Uber is that on top of your earnings from doing rides, there are lots of bonuses and promotions to be had.
