The COVID pandemic has completely upended the way people work, and now more than ever, people are working from home. I’ve worked from home for years now, and I have to say it’s one of the best things I have ever done. According to a Stanford economist, an “incredible 42% of people in the US are now working from home full time.”
While this does encompass some W-2 workers that have shifted from office to in-home work, this is still a huge number of people, and likely encompasses many freelancers/gig workers. If you’re looking to escape the 9-to-5 and time-consuming commute, choosing an online job and working from home might be an excellent option for you.
Below, we’ve broken out some of our favorite online job options you can choose in 2021. We’ll provide you an estimate of what you can expect to make based on our experience and those of our thousands of readers.

Best Online Jobs for 2021
1) Social Media Marketer
This online job pays: $25 to $30 per sign-up
If you’re on social media, you might consider making money from it. You can post about cash back apps. You earn money every time one of your friends or followers takes your advice and uses the app!
We’ve filtered out the subpar apps and here I’ll list only the ones we use personally.
Tell your social media followers about
- Rakuten – cash back at online stores and restaurants
- GetUpside – cash back on fuel
- Ibotta – cash back at supermarkets
- Shopkick – more cash back at supermarkets, shopping malls and more
You can feel good promoting these apps online because they actually do save people money.
I’ve earned over $400 cash with Rakuten. It was easy and I tell my friends about it all the time because I want them to save money too!
Rakuten is a huge company. Their logo in on the jerseys of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. This app has millions of happy users – like me.
Rakuten typically pays you $25 when one of your friends or followers spends $25 through their app. Think of how many followers you have on all your channels. If just 4 people take your advice, you’ll earn $100. And they’ll each earn cash back too!
You can also promote the GetUpside app to your followers. They advertise all over radio.
With this app you save up to 25¢ per gallon of gas, 35% at restaurants, and 15% at grocery stores. Meelad and Paula on our team especially love this app.
Earn $5 for each of your followers who makes a qualifying purchase.
You and your followers will earn cash back from over 300 stores like Target and Walmart. You get a $20 bonus when using our Ibotta promo code, yruqmtu.
2) Take Online Surveys
This online job pays: $100+ per month
This is fast money from an online job. It’s not big money though! But every bit can help when you’ve got some spare time.
Melissa on our team likes Swagbucks. She’s made over $150 in the last 3 months using Swagbucks – and she does it very casually and infrequently, so if you have more time, you can earn more.
3) Online Data Entry
This online job pays: $20 per gig, depending on size and expertise
When I was younger I did some data entry jobs for money, and boy, was it boring. But hey, a job is a job when you need it!
You can search for a variety of online data entry jobs (and even more online jobs) at Flexjobs.
4) Teach / Tutor
This online job pays: $25 an hour (or more, depending on expertise)
Teaching or tutoring is a great online job. I’ve done it, and it feels very rewarding. If you’re business-minded you can create a video course on a site like teachable.
Here at The RideShare Guy we use Teachable to host our educational course about how to make more money as an Uber or Lyft driver. We sell this course, called Maximum Ridesharing Profits.
You can sell your course about nutrition, your hobby, a language, or anything you know that you think others would want to learn.
For quick money, you can apply to teach English on a site like Education First (EF). Or you can list your one-on-one tutoring service on sites like Facebook and Craigslist. Teach anyone in the world using Skype, Whatsapp, Google Hangouts, or Zoom.
If you’re already a teacher and are looking to make some extra money, consider selling lesson plans or other printables using a site like Teachers Pay Teachers.
5) Improve Apps
This online job pays: $100+ per month, depending on availability
6) Sell Your Photos Online
This online job pays: $100+ per month (depending on how much you have to sell and how popular your themes are)
Online stock photography sites like Shutterstock, iStock, DepositPhotos and Adobe Stock pay you when someone uses your photos.
I haven’t uploaded photos to these sites, but I have paid for these photos. So basically I paid Shutterstock, which paid a percent to the photographer I chose. I paid for photos of skylines, beautiful landscapes, along with photos of regular things like gas stations.
You can even take photos of relatively mundane things, like this example stock photo below!
7) Review New Music
This online job pays: $50+ per month, depending on availability
Sites like Slicethepie.com pay you for reviewing new music. No, you won’t get rich doing this. But it is a fun way to make money online.
8) Sell Your Stuff
This online job pays: Hundreds per month, depending on what you sell!
Try sites like Decluttr and Gazelle to sell your things. I’ve sold everything from collectibles to my musical instruments when I really needed money. I sold my trumpet online through Craigslist. I know a woman who loves to sell her previously-worn clothes on eBay.
In addition, you can try selling things you don’t want or need anymore on Facebook Marketplace. If you’re selling a dining room table, for instance, you’ll want to see what other tables in your city and similar quality to yours are going for, then price accordingly.
Melissa, our Managing Editor, recently moved and downsized. She was able to make several hundred dollars over the course of a month selling things she didn’t need anymore. In addition, you can also buy things at garage or estate sales and ‘flip’ them online as well. You don’t even have to fix them up if you don’t want to!
9) Sell Gold
This online job pays: It depends on what you’re selling – from little to hundreds of dollars!
Have any gold laying around? If so, you can sell it on sites like Cash for Gold USA.
More Profitable Work-from-Home Jobs
1) Blog Publisher
This online job pays: $0 to hundreds of thousands per month – yes, thousands!
If you have a lot to say, especially about a specific subject, you can make money online!
We recommend you start to see how you like it. Start with buying cheap web hosting from Bluehost or Hostgator.
Both hosting providers are great. I use Hostgator for one of my sites and it loads fast (very important!) and the customer service is really good. Harry has used Bluehost in the past and found it to be a great host for a beginning site.
Do not use free hosting. The last thing you want is a slow site that is under the control of someone else. Bluehost and Hostgator have cheap hosting (like $3 or $4 per month) and it’s completely worth it.
Running a blog is real work but also really fun. Harry, the founder of this site, began it as a simple blog. Now this site reaches millions of people all around the world!
You can really jump start your blogging success by taking a course like Earn More Blogging, taught by Greg Johnson of the successful blog Club Thrifty.
I worked for a previous web site started by a husband and wife team. They began as a simple WordPress blog and grew it until they were able to hire writers and editors and tech help.
You can make millions (yes, really) with a blog. You can also make nothing if you don’t treat it like a real online job! True, you can work on your blog from anywhere in the world or from home in your pajamas. But there is real work to be done if you want to make real money.
Step 1 – sign-up for Bluehost or Hostgator now. Then start writing!
Step 2 – take a course like Earn More Blogging to kick start your blogging success OR take a course like Stupid Simple SEO, which will help you start ranking for topics fast (get seen, get started earning with advertising!)
2) Freelance writer
This online job pays: At least $75 per article, up to $500+ depending on the topic, length of article, and your expertise
This is one of my favorite online jobs. I’ve done it, and I’ve also hired many freelance writers. The beauty is you can select the writing projects you enjoy and turn down others. And as you develop a reputation in your field, you can charge more.
For instance, some writers start at $25 per article, but I know firsthand that some writers command $500or more per article! In general, you’ll earn more money the more you write, the more difficult your topic is (science, health, technology, etc.) and where you get published. Don’t stay at the $25 rate for long – chances are you are a better writer than you think you are!
But if you want to really bolt past the competition, I highly recommend Holly Johnson’s Earn More Writing course. Holly is an expert freelance writer, and I’m kind of shocked she gives away her best secrets to making money online.
When I was Managing Editor of a big website I hired freelance writers with the following traits:
- dedicated to accuracy
- accountable people who respect deadlines
- open to coaching/learning
Check out Holly’s course to run instead of crawl in your new online job.
3) Search Engine Marketer
This online job pays: $50/per hour and up
Here at The RideShare Guy we have a search engine marketer. He works online and his job is to help our articles appear at the top of Google search results.
This online job is a great career for people who are
- have strong attention to detail
- dedicated to staying on top of new search engine trends
You don’t necessarily need a college degree for this online job. You can start working for an online agency and then branch out on your own.
If you want to learn how to effectively use search engine optimization for your own website or to write for someone else, make sure to take a course like Stupid Simple SEO. In that course, Mike teaches you exactly how to use search engine tools, track your rankings (and those of competitors) and more.
4) Virtual Assistant
This online job pays: $20/per hour and up
Here at The RideShare Guy we have a few online virtual assistants.
Our virtual assistants do everything from tracking information in spreadsheets, to signing-up for programs, to finding information for us.
When I’ve hired Virtual Assistants I’ve looked for people who are
- able to follow instructions
If you want to learn how to be an effective VA, market yourself, and find clients right away, sign up for Kayla Sloan’s 10KVA course. Kayla is a virtual assistant expert and has helped us find many of the VAs we currently work with.
5) Software / App Developer
This online job pays: $50/per hour and up
If you enjoy building things and are a logical problem-solver, this could be a great career for you.
Expect to earn an online salary in the range of $75,000 to $140,000 per year. In this field, the skills pay the bill. As you up your skill level, you can command higher pay. Many employers now don’t really care if you have a college degree, they care only that you can prove you can do the job.
To showcase your skills, you might create a fun project as part of your portfolio to show future employers. Or you might go the gig economy route and stay independent, charging companies to hire you by the hour or by the app.
Hesitant about what kind of skills you’ll need? Take a basics class through Udemy to learn the ropes!
6) Web Designer
This online job pays: $25/hour and up
You can work for yourself by listing your services on sites like upwork.com. Or you can work for a company instead.
Pay varies widely. You want to build a portfolio of sites and a roster of satisfied clients then increase your pay rate. You can learn the ropes of how to design websites by taking classes through Udemy.
This online job can pay in the range of $25 to $100 per hour.
7) Online Bookkeeper
This online job pays: $15/hour and up
Expect to earn between $15 and $20 per hour in this online job. Bookkeeping may be a good online job for you if you’re:
- willing to learn the company’s bookkeeping software
You can learn how to get started with bookkeeping by taking a course like Bookkeeping Basics.
8) Author Books
This online job pays: $0 to thousands per month!
This is a dream online job for many. These days you don’t have to be contracted by a major publishing house. Instead, you can self-publish. Assuming you can write a great book, the big challenge will be promoting it.
There are millions of ebooks for sale and you have to really stand out. Luckily, there are many bloggers who review books and there are communities that enjoy finding new authors.
You can also first build your reputation by publishing free short stories or articles on your website. We recommend getting started with Bluehost to get your first website up and running.
You can publish your ebook on with KDP or CreateSpace. You can also go the traditional publisher route. Not sure which way is best for you? We recommend the book Ideas, Influence and Income to help walk you through the whole process, step by step!
Selling your books online can be a great source of passive online income. Once you’ve written your book, people can buy it for years and years.
This online job pays: $15/hour and up
Are you that person who gets irritated when you spot a typo? And you always spot typos! Perhaps you even noticed a typo somewhere in this article.
You can earn about $20 per hour with this online job. You don’t have to make any major edits. Your job is to take the final draft and fix capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and formatting.
The trick to earning good money online as a proofreader is being skilled at attracting more clients. Again, we recommend setting up a website in order to market yourself and direct clients to your portfolio.
To get started, we recommend the highly regarded Proofread Anywhere course. This course will not only teach you the ins and outs of proofreading, but also how to market yourself and find clients.
10) Online Marketer
This online job pays: Usually commission-based
This is a serious career where you can earn over $100,000 per year working online. You might also choose to work for yourself as an entrepreneur.
To do well, you’ll want to master a variety of skills such as copywriting, search engine optimization, social media marketing, email marketing, video marketing, and more.
You can teach yourself many of these basics through courses offered by Udemy.
11) Graphic Designer
This online job pays: $20/hour and up
Many artistic people want this online career. To get ahead of the competition, you’ll want to be great not only design but also at interacting with your clients and co-workers.
Back in the day, I taught a course on Photoshop at a college. These days you can take an online course and practice from home, like Graphic Design Bootcamp!
12) Online Voiceover Actor
This online job pays: $50/hr and up depending on talent
This is a fun online job! I’ve done this job (I’ve had a lot of jobs!) but back then you were in a professional studio. Today, you can set-up a home studio at a very reasonable cost.
You basically need a good microphone (this is a good, basic option), headset, a quiet area, and proper recording software.
Then you post your demo and audition for work! Once you have a demo, you can set up shop on Fiverr and start to sell your voice for commercials, YouTube videos and more.
13) Sell Products Online
This online job pays: $0 to hundreds of dollars per month
You can create crafts and homemade items and sell them on sites like Etsy, CafePress, and eBay.
14) Resume Writer
This online job pays: $15/hour and up depending on skill and project-size
Want an online job? Help others get a job!
Post your services on sites like Fiverr, Craigslist, and Upwork. You can also post on local sites like Nextdoor, to see if your neighbors are interested in having their resumes reviewed by a local (just make sure to charge for it and collect testimonials!).
This online job pays: $0 to thousands per month
The pay varies wildly for YouTubers. Getting paid from ads that YouTube places on your videos is the simplest way to get paid. You’ll need hundreds of thousands of video views before you see decent ad revenue.
However, you can make money online using YouTube even with fewer than 10,000 subscribers. To do so, you’ll need to do more than just accept ads being splashed on your channel.
See if you can give your audience something valuable that they’re willing to pay for such as
- paid membership to advanced videos
- personal one-on-one consulting
- sell products made by other companies
- sell your own products
- promote other YouTubers when they pay you
