Long gone are the days when the only food you could order for delivery was pizza. Thanks to food delivery apps like DoorDash, you can order anything from fast food to takeout from sit-down restaurants or your favorite meal from a local mom-and-pop shop.

Sign up and start ordering with DoorDash today!

DoorDash is one of the most popular food delivery apps to date and it’s a reliable way to get warm meals delivered straight to your door from familiar places. In recent years, the company has expanded to partner with more restaurants and even grocery stores to enhance the customer experience.

If you’re wondering “what is DoorDash?” here’s what you need to know about one of the best food delivery apps on the market right now.

    How DoorDash Works

DoorDash is simple to use. You just download the app and then allow your location to be picked up so you can see all the restaurants in your area that DoorDash partners with.

You’ll see the average delivery time for each restaurant too.

There’s also a desktop version of the website to use as well. You can search for food by category or type in a specific restaurant.

When you select a restaurant, you’ll see a menu where you can add food, meals, and drinks to your order.

Before you place your order, the total amount plus taxes and any estimated tips will show up on your screen.

There is some room to adjust your tip, but Doordash gives you some flexibility in selecting your tip amount, and DD recommends tipping since all this money goes directly to your driver as a courtesy.

Once you place your order, you can actually track the status and see

    • When the restaurant accepted it and started preparing the food
    • When your DoorDash driver has arrived at the restaurant or store to pick it up
    • When they’re headed to your home

When your order is picked up, DoorDash shows you where the delivery driver is in real-time so you can prepare to receive it or have it dropped off at your door with contactless delivery.

As an alternative to delivery, DoorDash allows you to place an order that you intend to pick up. This is usually a less popular option since it’s convenient to just order for delivery. However, you may want to use this feature in some instances if you know you’ll be out and just want to order ahead for pickup and save on delivery fees.

    DoorDash Statistics

DoorDash was founded in January 2013 by co-founders Tony Xu, Stanley Tang, Andy Fang, and Evan Moore. The San Francisco-based company was originally called, but was incorporated as DoorDash later that year. Tony Xu is currently the company’s CEO.

In 2014, DoorDash raised $17.3 million in funding from investors such as Sequoia Capital and venture capital firms including CRV and Khoosla. To date, DoorDash has completed 12 rounds of funding and raised $2.5 billion.

In 2018, DoorDash surpassed Uber Eats in popularity, and by 2019, it beat out GrubHub to be named the largest food delivery provider in the U.S. In 2020, the company went public and currently has a market share of 60%.

DoorDash is available in other countries including Canada, Japan, and Germany. According to a recent report, by DoorDash had 450,000 merchants and more than 20 million customers.

How Many DoorDash Drivers Are There?

To keep up with the growing demand for food orders, DoorDash is always hiring independent delivery drivers or Dashers. According to an annual report, there are more than 1 million Dashers working in the U.S., Canada, and Australia each month.

Interest DoorDash drivers must apply first and meet the basic requirements. The interesting thing about delivery driving is that you don’t actually have to have a car. So, if you live in a city or very walkable area, don’t be surprised if your food order arrives with a Dasher who’s using a bike, scooter, or is even traveling on foot.

How to Sign Up As a DoorDash Customer

Signing up as a DoorDash customer is pretty easy. First, you’ll need to download the app or visit the website and enter your name, email and password. You can also sign up quickly with your Facebook or Gmail account.

Once you sign up, you’ll just need to enter an address that DoorDash will save for all your future orders. You can change your address at any time especially if you need food delivered somewhere else. For example, you may want to order food while you’re on vacation or at work.

To do this, simply change your delivery address on your account, since it doesn’t lock in just your primary address. Another fun aspect about this is that you can send meals to friends as well by adding their address and paying for the order.

Speaking of paying for your order, the next step to getting your DoorDash account set up is to add a card to your account for payments. DoorDash accepts Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, and Venmo.

All payment is collected through the app so you won’t be paying your Dasher or the store or restaurant directly.

Life is busy, and DoorDash provides a valuable convenience if you need food from a restaurant or groceries and don’t have the time or motivation to pick it up yourself. Sometimes, DoorDash offers promotions for your first order so you can basically try it out for free.

Plus, using the app helps give back to Dashers in your community who rely on gig work part-time or full-time. If you haven’t tried DoorDash yet, you’re missing out!
